How many years have you been working in the industry?
I started working as a technician in a post house in high school. Around 2000. Started in broadcast engineering professionally in 2008. Started in college sports in February 2020.
What is your favorite position to work?
My favorite operator position is TD -- not that I work any operator positions often. One of our student directors told me I should work camera more often after I ran two full games this past spring and realized I hadn't done camera for a full sporting event since high school and told her that.
What is your favorite sport to broadcast?
My favorite sport to broadcast is hockey soccer. I understand what's going on the best and with the most nuance of any sport we broadcast. That said, Volleyball and Wrestling provide some fun challenges that we don't see in the other sports that we broadcast, and our Baseball facility is amazing to work in.
What is one lesson you have learned that you would like to share with others?
With every broadcast you should learn something new. Keep looking for ways to make your broadcast better and don't sweat the things that the viewer won't notice -- take a note and move on.
What are your career goals?
This year I get to tell nearly all our student workers that my Steam account is older than them, so I've got that going for me. I have an engineering mind and love the medium. I want to solve puzzles and provide the best experience for the audience and work with folks who see that same value working towards that same goal. I'm not looking for a fancy title - I've been there already. If I can keep making progress and develop solutions that provide for that experience and am valued for doing so, I'm happy.
What is your favorite memory from working in the industry?
Favorite memories are always the people and things they do. There's a lot going on around us all the time and we're in an often fast-paced environment, but the people are the key to this business. A silly face while cleaning a PTZ, a joke or pithy statement that lifts someone up when they're feeling down, those are the things I remember most fondly.
